about

The roots of this composition began over 35 years ago in a small music lab at the University of Tennessee at Martin. I was obviously not a student at the time, but one of my best friends’ mother was a professor that taught percussion at the school. Her classroom was right next to what we now call a digital music lab. At the time, those really did not exist. All we knew was it was a closet with a classic Macintosh computer, a piano, a four-track reel to reel and a state of the art 8 bit Ensoniq Mirage Sampler. There was also what I must believe was an original wall sized Arp synthesizer that no one knew how to work. If only I could go back in time now!

We were amazed with the sequencer of the Macintosh and me and my friend spent hours in this tiny room trying to figure things out. The main piece I would work on when I found myself alone in there was the beginnings of this composition. I was maybe 16 or 17 at the time.
The piece evolved over the years. It even became a rocking song with lyrics and vocals for my debut solo album Pathways. I believe that this version holds true to what I originally envisioned the piece to be all those years ago. Although, honestly, at the time, I could have never envisioned the tools we now have at our disposal.

This deep history is why I decided to addend the title with Symphony No. 1. It truly is the first composition of mine with any sort of depth.
